Headquarters Team

P.K. Nair, M. Bannister, S. Allen

In addition to the routine management and institutional linkage activities performed by CSTAF headquarters staff, the following took place since our last annual meeting:

  • PK Nair continued to lead the ongoing effort to develop the 1st World Agroforestry Congress (WCA), to be held in Orlando FL in June 2004, hosted by the University of Florida. CSTAF is one of the sponsors of the WCA. This is a significant global event in Agroforestry (http://conference.ifas.ufl.edu/wca).
  • Sarah Workman and Eddie Ellis continued field activities for a USDA TSTAR grant awarded to CSTAF to develop a research methodology combining on-farm participatory surveys, GIS, and market analysis to improve productivity, income, and conservation of trees on small farms in the U.S. Virgin Islands. In May 2004 CSTAF was awarded the third year funding of $34,110 for this project.
  • CSTAF was awarded a USDA Higher Education Challenge grant for $241,928 in collaboration with the National Agroforestry Center, the UF School of Forest Resources and Conservation, the UF Department of Agricultural Education and Communication, the University of Georgia (Carl Jordan), and Auburn University (Dennis Shannon). The grant is being used to develop University of Florida undergraduate distance education courses in agroforestry and natural resources, as well as an agroforestry demonstration sites at the University of Florida and an undergraduate agroforestry field course for the University of Georgia at Carl Jordan’s research farm in Athens, Georgia.
  • Three proposals were written to continue CSTAF work:
    • PK Nair and Bannister to the Association Liaison Office for University Cooperation in Development (ALO) with the support of funds from USAID India to develop agroforestry distance education for extension professionals in collaboration with three Indian universities; $298,953. This proposal was not funded.
