CSTAF to Publish White Paper on Agroforestry

CSTAF will publish the white paper Agroforestry in the Southeastern United States this August.

Drawing upon current literature, field observations, and surveys of natural resource professionals and Florida landowners, the paper provides a detailed overview of agroforestry in the Southeast and provides a list of publications and other resources available for interested readers.

The paper sets the context for the potential use of agroforestry by identifying the environmental and economic issues faced by today’s landowners, including urbanization of agricultural lands, agricultural intensification, industry and production changes in the forestry sector, and competition for and environmental pressures on rural water supplies.

Emerging agroforestry practices in the Southeast also are discussed in detail in terms of their research and field applications. Major practices discussed include alley cropping, forest farming, riparian forest buffers, silvopasture, windbreaks, and special applications.

Perceptions of natural resource professionals and landowners are also presented in terms of the perceived benefits, constraints and reasons for adoption of agroforestry.

The paper also discusses current developments and research needs in the areas of education and technology transfer, decision support systems, farmers’ networks, public policy, and economics. CSTAF’s Sarah Workman and Sam Allen are the authors.

The publication will be available as an on-line and print-friendly version at http://cstaf.ifas.ufl.edu/publications.htm.

An abbreviated version will also be available via EDIS – the University of Florida extension document website, at http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu.
