Organizers of the 1st
World Congress of Agroforestry in 2004 have scheduled
international experts to give presentations, arranged workshops
and activities, and enlisted the support of sponsors worldwide.
The theme of the congress
is Working Together for Sustainable Land-use Systems. The
congress will be held in the Hilton in the Walt Disney World
Resort, Orlando, Fla., June 27 through July 2, 2004.

World leaders in research
and development of natural resources will speak on different
aspects of agroforestry during the inaugural, plenary, and
sub-plenary functions. More than 20 concurrent sessions on as
many topics area also planned. Those wishing to present their
work in the concurrent or poster sessions should submit an
abstract on the conference website by Sept. 30, 2003.
Guests may participate in
one of three field trips to observe agroforestry practices in
the central Florida area. Agroforestry in an Urbanizing
Landscape, Non-Timber Forest Products and Public Land
Management, and Short Rotation Woody Crops illustrate
agroforestry techniques in practice in Central Florida.
Pre-congress workshops on
June 27 at the Hilton will focus on temperate-zone agroforestry,
with continuing education credits offered by the Society of
American Foresters.
The pre-congress tour
Midwestern Agroforestry Practice: Research and On-Farm
Demonstrations will be presented by the University of Missouri
Center for Agroforestry in Columbia, Missouri. A tour of North
Florida Agroforestry will follow the congress.
The congress includes
events and entertainment for families, including an evening at
Seaworld, with world-class shows, rides, animal encounters and a
reception celebration with tropical hors d’ oeuvres and
entertainment.
A limited amount of
financial aid is available to attend the congress, with
preference given to young scientists and researchers from
developing countries. Applicants are encouraged to submit an
abstract. Financial assistance applications will be accepted
until Sept. 30, 2003.
Congress organizers plan
to publish a state-of-the-art compendium of about 30 chapters
and a book of abstracts of all presentations before the
congress, and a Congress Declaration following the congress.
Selected presentations will be published as peer-reviewed
journal articles after the congress.
