1st World Congress Features Presentations by Agroforestry Leaders

Organizers of the 1st World Congress of Agroforestry in 2004 have scheduled international experts to give presentations, arranged workshops and activities, and enlisted the support of sponsors worldwide.

The theme of the congress is Working Together for Sustainable Land-use Systems. The congress will be held in the Hilton in the Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando, Fla., June 27 through July 2, 2004.

For complete information on the congress including registration forms, visit the website http://conference.ifas.ufl.edu/wca.

World leaders in research and development of natural resources will speak on different aspects of agroforestry during the inaugural, plenary, and sub-plenary functions. More than 20 concurrent sessions on as many topics area also planned. Those wishing to present their work in the concurrent or poster sessions should submit an abstract on the conference website by Sept. 30, 2003.

Guests may participate in one of three field trips to observe agroforestry practices in the central Florida area. Agroforestry in an Urbanizing Landscape, Non-Timber Forest Products and Public Land Management, and Short Rotation Woody Crops illustrate agroforestry techniques in practice in Central Florida.

Pre-congress workshops on June 27 at the Hilton will focus on temperate-zone agroforestry, with continuing education credits offered by the Society of American Foresters.

The pre-congress tour Midwestern Agroforestry Practice: Research and On-Farm Demonstrations will be presented by the University of Missouri Center for Agroforestry in Columbia, Missouri. A tour of North Florida Agroforestry will follow the congress.

The congress includes events and entertainment for families, including an evening at Seaworld, with world-class shows, rides, animal encounters and a reception celebration with tropical hors d’ oeuvres and entertainment.

A limited amount of financial aid is available to attend the congress, with preference given to young scientists and researchers from developing countries. Applicants are encouraged to submit an abstract. Financial assistance applications will be accepted until Sept. 30, 2003.

Congress organizers plan to publish a state-of-the-art compendium of about 30 chapters and a book of abstracts of all presentations before the congress, and a Congress Declaration following the congress. Selected presentations will be published as peer-reviewed journal articles after the congress.
