Workshops Focus on Techniques and Management

CSTAF continued its training sessions this year with three in-service workshops in Florida and Georgia for extension agents, educators and landowners.

The workshops were conducted in March, one in Gainesville, Fla., one in Quincy, Fla., and one in Tifton, Ga. The two-day workshops illustrated the variety of agroforestry options available, the sources for technical and background information, and resources and materials on agroforestry. Participants learned to develop extension programs and present information on agroforestry.

The workshops attracted 45 professionals and landowners, including 20 University of Florida Cooperative Extension agents, 12 University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agents, two educators with Natural Resources and Conservation Service and two landowners.

Workshops included classroom sessions as well as visits to field sites and demonstrations, where participants learned about agroforestry techniques and management decisions.

Participants indicated a wide variety of likely uses of the materials. Several extension agents plan to use silvopasture materials in their consultations with landowners and for landowner workshops and seminars on livestock and forage production. Several agents plan to use goat silvopasture and other materials for small growers and fruit producers. Two participants will reference the materials for news articles or radio announcements.

Based on participant evaluations, CSTAF is designing future training programs.

The workshops are an important component of CSTAF’s efforts to highlight the value of agroforestry techniques in the Southeast. They are a direct result of an agroforestry needs assessment conducted in 2000-2001.
