Agroforestry Briefs

Sam Allen Joins CSTAF

Sam Allen has joined CSTAF as a post-doctoral researcher working on environmental benefits of agroforestry and extension.

Allen is working with Vimila Nair to research the environmental benefits of alley cropping. He also is assisting Alan Long in developing agroforestry extension programs. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Mississippi State University and a Ph.D. in agroforestry from UF.

CSTAF Attends Agroforestry Conference

CSTAF collaborator Shibu Jose gave presentations on the use of cotton and pecans in alley cropping at the 8th North American Agroforestry Conference in Oregon in June. P.K. Nair, Mike Bannister and Sam Allen also attended. Bannister was elected to the Association of Temperate Agroforestry board, which sponsors the conference.

Ellis Introduces SEADSS in Vienna

Eddie Ellis introduced the Southeastern Agroforestry Decision Support System, or SEADSS, at a conference of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations in Vienna in June. Ellis discussed how SEADSS is used to help landowners and extension personnel select appropriate agroforestry systems.

The conference featured a variety of decision-support tools from throughout the world used for forest management.
