Nair and Bannister Supervise Research in Haiti

CSTAF Director P.K. Nair, foreground, inspects a re-sprouting coffee bush intercropped with taro and plantains, a practice promoted by the HAP project.

CSTAF Director P.K. Nair and
Assistant Director Michael Bannister traveled to Haiti on June 24 to supervise the research conducted by two University of Florida students, Raphael Pierre and Alain Michel (see related story) in support of the USAID-funded Hillside Agriculture Program (HAP).

Nair and Bannister met with HAP staff in the capital, Port au Prince, and then visited field sites near the southeastern city of Jacmel and the northern city of Cap Haitien.

The project is promoting a technique for regenerating coffee bushes by pruning and replacing the crowns. Pierre and Michel will perform their research in these, and other similar gardens.
